Director Himan Brown & The Mystery Theater

I believe my taste for some entertainment is different then some people today. I became somewhat of a fan of the old radio shows.
(In particular the horror suspense ones).
I remember as a kid about 10 or 12 tuning in the radio and hearing one in particular.
Yes tuning in as a kid,,,,,In the 1980's. Probly you could say I listened to one of the last
surviving radios shows.

It was called The CBS Radio Mystery theater hosted by the late E.G. Marshall.
(some might know him as Mr. Pratt from the movie Creepshow)
The radio show was directed by Himan Brown who I guess for his time and from what I have
seen and read about him is considered legendary. They even named a recording college after him.

Iv always wanted to recreate and old radio show. I searched the web and found some old radio
show scripts but I wanted and still want to do a recreation of The CBS Radio Mystery Theater.
I even called CBS to find out about the show and scripts. They said the person who was in charge of that was Himan Brown. he is still alive and in his 90's. They said they hated to give out his private number but they said that was really the only way because he never had an agent or anything.

So being very nervous because I knew of his legendary reputation I called (and recorded it for proof for anyone interested) I told him I wanted to do a recreation of his show.
He was very nice but very protective of the Mystery Theater. He wouldn’t give me any scripts
or no material what so ever. I was on my own if I wanted to do it. (Which I have found the music used in the show. It was the background music that was used on the series the Twilight Zone)

Heres a small list taken from the letter of the shows he directed on radio.

The Inner Sanctum Mysteries
The Thin Man
Dick Tracy
Terry and The Pirates
Nero Wolfe
Bulldog Drummond
Grand Central Station
The CBS Radio Mystery Theater
David Harum (Soap Opera)
Joyce Jordan (Soap Opera)
Johns Other Wife (Soap Opera)
(Etc...)

Knowing that he is or was somewhat famous for his time I asked if I sent him a self addressed
stamped envelope would he sign it. He said yes. So the following letter was what I wrote to
him and what he wrote back.

>HERES HOW THE LETTER READS<

Dear Mr Brown,

My name is Doug Patrick I was the guy that called you about doing a recreation of

the CBS Radio Mystery Theater for my college here in Cleveland Ohio. I understand

you cant give all your material out to everyone that wants it. Its just that I along with

many others have such a love for those shows and the whole magic of radio from that

era. I wish the torch could be passed on to us younger folks to try and keep that kind

of radio alive , although I know times have changed. That is why it would be so much

fun for me to do an old radio show. So that it would give me a chance to see what

it must of have been like to do a show like that. At any rate, It was truly an honor

to get a chance to speak to you.

Mabe on paper you could write down some of the shows that you worked on. Then you

could sign your name at the bottom.

Sincerly,
Doug Patrick

enclosed is a self addressed stamped envelope
